We are an independent school with a family feel and have created a place where women can not only train a sport they love, learn self defense, but also feel a sense of belonging within a strong community.

The benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for women

By learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, women will learn to value skills over height, weight, and strength. Women in our classes have described how their physical, emotional and mental health has greatly improved since they started learning BJJ with us. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has many benefits, including, but not limited to:

  • Feeling empowered and more confident. How do we do this?

    • By running a zero tolerance policy towards behaviours which do not follow our BJJ etiquette. Because our vision and mission is clear, we only attract students who follow and adhere to our strong vision.

    • By keeping an open-dialogue at all time

    • By running additional self-defence workshops in-house. You can view the schedule on our booking page here.

  • Improving fitness level while learning life-changing skills: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is recognised as the best martial arts for self-defence but also has many additional fitness benefits for female practitioners: BJJ will improve your stamina, reduce stress, build muscle, and improve flexibility. It will empower you to feel emotionally stronger, help you build your self-esteem and in the longer run, will encourage you to empower other women too. This is what we like to call the virtuous circle of BJJ

  • Being part of a community: We believe a great club is all about the people. We’re lucky to have an amazing bunch of women (and men) alongside us. We have built a BJJ community, not just a BJJ team.

Women BJJ Bristol

" My kids and I decided to start learning Jiu-Jitsu as it is a great sport for all of us where we can train the whole body in various ways. I thought it would be good if my daughter and my son would be able to self-defend if they needed to. I read on the internet that Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best martial arts for self defence - so we decided to give Jiu-Jitsu a go. I realised, Jiu-Jitsu is also about self-discipline, recognising my own and others limitations, and looking after each other.

As an extra bonus, l feel much fitter in myself, my kids are loving it and we found a very lovely group of new friends who make practising turn into fun and who support us to progress".

"AOM offers me a lot of things. It gives me knowledgeable jiu-jitsu training from Rad's unmatched passion for the sport, ample opportunity to practice and train in a safe and inclusive environment, a fun and practical way to stay healthy both physically and mentally and a community that feels nurturing and supportive.

Most of all, however, being part of AOM with Rad, Lise and my training partners gives me somewhere that really feels like home."

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for women beginners

We have a strong community of BJJ women who empower and support one another. If you are a beginner, don’t be afraid to start something new and push our door to start your BJJ journey. Whether you are familiar with a martial arts environment or not, we understand it can be overwhelming to walk into what seems like a heavy-male orientated environment. When you enter our BJJ club, there’ll always be someone to welcome you with a smile, answer your questions, help you fix your gi* (provided for your first class) or your BJJ belt.

Classes will usually start the following way:

  • Warm up with solo BJJ drills

  • Sequence two-by-two

  • End of sessions with women training and rolling together.

  • At the end of class, all students usually join in (non mandatory) for a 10 minutes breathing technique which will help with your BJJ and fitness practice.

Because we want to stay away from a corporation-style club, we offer a sense of community like no other in Bristol. Our BJJ club, classes and get togethers are great places to interact with other like-minded women!

There is no age restriction or fitness level required to start BJJ with us. Our club prides itself for promoting a healthy lifestyle in a family friendly environment.

We always have toiletries and accessories available. Whether you have forgotten an elastic band or need a tampon or period pad, just help yourself. No question asked.

Remember, there is no age or fitness level required to start BJJ with us. Look at this 60 years old woman who just received her BJJ black belt ! The female BJJ community is only getting bigger around the world!
