Why should my child learn Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has many benefits for kids and adults:

  • Build self-confidence: Brazilian jiu-jitsu is particularly beneficial for kids to build self-confidence. BJJ requires strategic thinking and problem-solving on the mat. Children learn to assess situations and react quickly. This problem-solving skill can translate to increase confidence when facing challenges outside their training environment. Kids will also learn to persevere and develop resilience to overcome obstacles. BJJ teaches children how to control and resolve conflicts without resorting to aggression.

  • Learn self-defence: BJJ places a strong emphasis on technique and leverage rather than relying on sheer strength. BJJ specializes in ground fighting and submissions, teaching children how to defend themselves if a confrontation goes to the ground. This is crucial, as many altercations end up in grappling situations. BJJ teaches not only how to defend against attacks but also how to escape from dangerous situations.

  • Build social skills: Although Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not your traditional team sport, it requires essential communication and cooperation between partners on the mat.  Kids need to drill movements and techniques together and will be sparring. The earlier you teach children to communicate with each other, the faster they will learn this transferrable skill outside the mats.

  • Learn to care for your training partner: BJJ emphasizes respect for training partners and opponents. This respect extends to everyday interactions, helping children navigate social situations and conflicts with a measured and respectful approach. BJJ instils discipline and control in children, teaching them to manage their emotions and respond to threats with a clear mind.

  • Get away from screen time: I don't think I need to explain!
